The composition of Bordeaux mixture is critical. The primary ingredients of this formula are  copper sulphate, hydrated lime (calcium hydroxide) and water. Copper sulphate and hydrated lime are mixed in water in two separate vessels and then the two solutions are mixed together. The critical parameter of this formula is deciding the ration of these ingredients.

Their ratio should be:

• 3 tablespoons of copper sulfate
• 3 tablespoons of hydrated lime
• 1 gallon of water
• For large quantity mixture, the formula can be expressed as 10:10:100. This would be as follows:
• 10 pounds of copper sulfate
• 10 pounds of hydrated lime
• 100 gallons of water

Once the ratio is decided and the mixture is ready, the other key point is the application timing. Copper sulphate has a burning effect, therefore, the mixture should be applied at specific time intervals. The best time is to apply before leaf emergence in the spring and after leaf drop in the fall. This will ensure that the copper sulfate will not damage the leaves. In case, the solution is meant to be applied after dormancy has broken, then it is recommended to use a 1:1:100, to avoid damaging the leaves.
